Image Format File Size Comparison: JPG vs PNG vs WebP vs AVIF

Toolstik2 min read
Comparison of JPG, PNG, WebP, and AVIF file sizes for one source image

For the same 1600×1200 graphic, PNG was 144.5 KB, JPEG at quality 80 was 33.7 KB, WebP at quality 80 was 15.5 KB, and AVIF at quality 50 was 6.5 KB. That is the image format file size comparison in one sentence. Convert your own files with the WebP Converter — the default output is WebP.

Method

Date: 17 October 2026. Encoder: sharp (libvips). Source: a synthetic 1600×1200 SVG (linear gradient, a yellow circle, a caption) rasterized once, then encoded to each format. We did not photograph a camera RAW; a photo with noise will shrink less as PNG and may look different at the same quality setting.

FormatSettingsSizevs PNG
PNGcompression level 6144.5 KB—
JPEGquality 8033.7 KB−77%
JPEGquality 6023.8 KB−84%
WebPquality 8015.5 KB−89%
WebPquality 6011.2 KB−92%
AVIFquality 506.5 KB−96%

What to do with the numbers

  • Website photos: start at WebP quality 80. That cut this sample to about a tenth of PNG and half of JPEG-80.
  • Email, print, or a client who cannot open WebP: JPEG 80.
  • Logos, screenshots, UI with text: PNG still wins for sharp edges. This sample is a gradient, so PNG looks inefficient here.
  • Maximum shrinkage on a modern site: AVIF. Toolstik does not write AVIF; the WebP Converter can only read it when your browser supports AVIF decode.

If the file is already huge because of pixel count, resize to the display width first, then convert. Compress images if you want a quality slider without changing format by hand.
